According to the World Energy Access report released by the International Energy Agency (IEA), 239 million people in India remained without electricity access in 2016, about a quarter of the worldwide total. The report also suggested that India is expected to reach universal electricity access in the early-2020s. It added that progress has also been made on clean cooking, but 830 million people in India still lack access. There is no denying the fact that India has achieved spectacular economic growth over the past three decades that has transformed it into a global economic powerhouse, resulting into improved living conditions of its citizens, but these improvements were not uniformly distributed among India’s diverse population.
