TIME Magazine Calls Gurmehar Kaur A ‘Next Generation Leader’ And Twitter Just Can’t Take It

The TIME Magazine has included Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur in its list of Next Generation Leaders for 2017 and commended her as a “Free-Speech Warrior”. And she is the only Indian to be included in the list. As if this wasn’t enough, the 20-year-old has been termed as a “peace activist”.

For the uninitiated, Gurmehar Kaur is daughter of Captain Mandeep Singh of the Indian Army who was martyred while taking on terrorists in Jammu & Kashmir. She shot to fame nationally and internationally in 2016 when a video of hers calling for peace between India and Pakistan started doing rounds of the social media.

But then, unfortunately, Kaur became a prominent face of India’s political Left when she accused the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) for a campus violence at Delhi’s Ramjas College. The ‘violence’ was in fact a clash between the Leftists and the Right-wing students groups over an invite the Left-wing had extended to Umar Khalid.
Her one-sided stand on the broader and more serious issue of campus violence was called out by Randeep Hooda, whose precise logic derailed every Leftist argument in support of Gurmehar Kaur.

The next time she got media attention was earlier this month when she allegedly issued threats to two boys for posting memes having images from videos posted publicly by her. In its report, Opindia held that she did exactly what she complained of some eight months ago: issuing threats to someone just because she did not like something posted online.

Twitterati was obviously furious over the announcement made by TIME and did not fail to exercise their freedom of speech. Have a look at the tweets by Twitter users annoyed by the news:

One who threatens young boys for meme while printing herself as icon of free speech. Hypocrite

However, there were a few who supported Kaur and lauded the announcement by TIME. Have a look at their tweets below:

Gurmehar Kaur has herself received threats for her political views. She is now one of radial points of national debate on freedom of speech and dissent.
