Director Meghna Gulzar’s Raazi has opened to a fantastic response on its first day at the box office. Despite not being a commercial entertainer and any lead male actor, the spy-thriller raked in Rs 7.53 crore. The collections are great since Raazi has a niche appeal and primarily targets to multiplex audience in the metro cities. Interestingly, it has turned out to be the sixth-highest opener of the year after Avengers: Infinity War, Baaghi 2, Padmaavat, Raid and Pad Man. It has shattered the first day business of films like Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Pari and October.
Talking about the plot, the story of Raazi revolves around Sehmat (Alia Bhatt) a Kashmiri girl, who marries a Pakistani Army Officer (Vicky Kaushal) to spy for her own country. The film is based on Harinder Sikka’s book Calling Sehmat. Apart from the gripping plot and superb narrative, audiences praised the performance of Alia Bhatt and called it one of her finest acts till date. Filmmaker Meghna Gulzar had earlier said in an interview that Alia was her first and only choice for the film. “From the time I learnt that I have to helm the film, Alia’s face popped up in my mind and that never changed. I am really thankful to Alia for agreeing to do the film. Otherwise, I couldn’t have made the film. I don’t think anybody else could fit in, with all due respect to the other actresses.”
Apart from Alia and Vicky, the spy-thriller also features Rajit Kapoor, Soni Razdan, Jaideep Ahlawat, Amruta Khanvilkar and Shishir Sharma in pivotal roles.
