As per latest reports, the New York Police Department has gladly welcomed their first female turbaned Sikh Officer, Gursoach Kaur in recent times.
Gursoach Kaur becomes a part of the New York Police Department as an Auxiliary Police Officer (APO).
Kaur proudly puts on her turban, a symbol of recognizing Sikhism out of India. Kaur’s initiation will positively serve an encouragement for other females to be a part the force of police force.
The Sikh Officers Association shared the big news, “Sikh Officers Association is proud to welcome First #Sikh Turbaned Female Auxiliary Police Officer in the NYPD. APO Gursoch Kaur and other Auxiliary Police Officers graduated from the Academy. We are proud of you. Your service will be a motivation for others to join the Law enforcement Family. #sikhsinlawenforcement #femalesikhofficers #proudmoment.”
The alliance also conveyed the similar feeling on their personal FB handle.
“Your service will be a motivation for others to join the Law enforcement Family,” it stated.
Mr Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs also made a special tweet regarding Gursoach’s success of being the foremost turbaned female police officer.
Mr Hardeep Singh Puri also stated that she will be a big inspiration to many people.
Hardeep Singh Puri tweeted, “Delighted to see a turbaned lady officer in NYPD. Hope this fosters better understanding of Sikhism & Sikhs & corrects perceptions in US so that incident which happened with me in 2010 & recently with @Canada minister @NavdeepSBains do not recur.”
This is an optimistic step by New York Police Department in the direction of generating more wide-ranging personnel.
Even previously during December 2016, Police Commissioner James O’Neill declared the modification in regulations, which permitted Sikh police officials to put on a turban, in place of the customary cap. At the time, there were nearly 160 Sikh police officials in New York Police Department.
James stated, “It’s a major change in our uniform policy, so we had to go about it carefully. And now I have the opportunity to make the change, and I thought it was about time that we did that. While the NYPD patrol guide maintains a strict policy regarding head coverings, officers will now be able to wear turbans with a religious exemption signed by top department officials.”
The modification in the guiding principle was one method to hearten diversification and recognition of the ethnicity.
