Revved up after watching Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2? Here are some superhero games to keep you going
This summer, it’s superhero movies all over, kicking off with the incredible Black Panther, which broke all sorts of box-office records, including that of Titanic. Then came Avengers: Infinity War, which is still breaking the box office, followed by Deadpool 2, then Ant-Man and The Wasp later in the year. 2018 is shaping up to be a year of superheroes, and we’re pretty sure after watching all those movies you’re hungry for more action. Here’s a bunch of games that let you be a superhero.
Injustice: Gods Among Us + Injustice 2
Made by the folks behind Mortal Kombat, Injustice: Gods Among Us was a fantastic one-on-one fighting game featuring Wonder Woman, Batman, Flash and the rest of the cast. With one difference — Superman is the bad guy in this alternate reality, which is told through a superb story mode. Injustice 2 takes the superhero fight to another level, with an even better story, along with a neat armour system. Injustice 2 is not only a solid, fun, fighter, it’s also got tight battle mechanics and a lot of replay value. Plus, there are some really powerful supermoves and graphics that look incredibly real.
Marvel vs Capcom Series
From the folks behind Street Fighter, Marvel vs Capcom is the yin to Injustice’s yang. While the latest Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite does look rough, it’s still got that excellent two-on-two fighting mechanics. The best part of the series is its use of screen-filling special effects and supers that let you completely unleash all hell on your opponents — with a roster of handpicked fan favourites from X-Men, Avengers and other Marvel franchises, as well as a whole lot of Capcom characters thrown into the fight for some extra oomph.
Deadpool
Did you know that everyone’s favourite Merc with a Mouth, Mr Deadpool himself, once had his very own game way back in 2013? He did, and it was awesome; if you own a PlayStation 3 or a PC, you can experience it yourself. Deadpool is voiced by the great Nolan North, the voice of Nathan Drake and many more of your fav characters, and he does a fantastic job. Deadpool, along with his signature fourth wall-breaking comedy, is actually a pretty good slash-em-up.
Telltale’s Batman, Guardians of the Galaxy
If all-out action is not your thing, then you could dive deep into the masters of storytelling, Telltale’s narrative-based games. Combining old-school adventure game mechanics and extremely well-written storylines, their takes on Batman, Guardians of the Galaxy and Fables is worth experiencing.
Batman: Arkham series
No game has captured what it is like being the Batman, quite like the Arkham series has. Starting with Arkham Asylum to Arkham Knight, the game lets you swing and glide across buildings. Fighting is fluid and rhythmic, as Batman moves from enemy to enemy in a flurry of moves. Then there’s the predator mode, which allows you to sneak and stalk enemies, ensnaring them in traps. The best part though is using all of Batman’s gadgets, including the Batmobile in Arkham Knight.
Infamous: Second Son
While Infamous 1 and 2 were great, with a superb electricity-based superhero, Second Son really ups the ante when it comes to an open-world playground for your superhero powers. You play a troubled young man, Delsin Rowe, with inferno-like powers. As you progress, you are able to acquire new powers, a favourite being the Neon power, where you zip and fight around in 80s-style neon glows. Infamous: Second Son is the definitive superhero game.
South Park: The Fractured but Whole
As a kid, imagining ourselves as superheroes was all we had. South Park: The Fractured but Whole features the whole cast of the potty-mouthed TV series roleplay, as superheroes in a new zany RPG. With graphics that look just like the show, the original voice cast and you get to customise and build your very own South Park superhero avatar. The combat is turn-based, but quite strategic and easy to get into. Also, it’s available on the Nintendo Switch.
Lego’s Marvel and DC games
Just like Lego, the building block company, has toy lines from Marvel and DC, and recently its very own The Lego Batman Movie, they also have a gaming division that produces some really zany versions of popular Marvel movies. Watch out for their Lego Marvel’s Avengers and Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2.
Marvel’s Spider-Man
Releasing in September, Marvel’s Spider-Man wowed everyone at last year’s E3, featuring a beautiful, detailed open world to put your web-slinging moves into action. The trailers showed Spider-Man take on a new villain, Mister Negative. The game will reportedly also allow Peter Parker to craft his own gadgets. Let’s hope we see the Iron Spider suit from Infinity War or we’re gonna be upset.
Crackdown 3
Like Iron Man, several superheroes need super suits to be, well, super. Crackdown does just that — a game that lets you don a power suit and rampage across an entire city. With Crackdown 3’s release pegged to 2018, we can’t wait to wreck the new game’s city.
