According to a new survey, Taj Mahal, India’s iconic ivory-white marble mausoleum in Agra, is the second best UNESCO world heritage site in the world. Every year nearly 8 million visitors throng to this place to witness the monument of love built by mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal.
However, India’s topmost tourist attraction has its own share of controversies. It all started when UP government issued a tourist booklet featuring the state’s prominent tourist attractions. However, this new publication failed to include the world famous Taj Mahal. Taking the controversy to a new level, BJP MLA Sangeet Som’s said the mausoleum is “a blot on the Indian culture” as its creator (Shahjehan) imprisoned his father and wanted to wipe out Hindus. BJP MP Vinay Katiyar added another dimension to the controversy claiming that the monument was built over an ancient Hindu temple called Tejomahal.
Twitterati too have their own take on the findings:
It must be noted that on March 26, 2015, six lawyers in Agra filed a petition in the district court, claiming that the Taj Mahal was a Shiva Temple known as Tejo Mahalaya and that Hindus should be allowed access inside its premises to perform puja. Lawyer Harishankar Jain claimed that “in 1212 AD, Raja Paramardi Dev had built Tejo Mahalaya temple palace, which at present, in common parlance, is known as Taj Mahal. The temple was later inherited by Raja Maan Singh, the then maharaja of Jaipur. After him, the property was held and managed by Raja Jai Singh but was annexed by Shah Jahan (in 1632) during his regime.”
