Humans are suckers for inventions: it is only because of our drive to imagine the unimaginable that we have come so far with what was given to us. But in this wide pool of the mind's eye, there are still plenty of things that are to be explored.
For the last decade or so, science has been promising us a lot of great things and products. We have all seen videos of a person trying multiple clothes through a digital mirror, or just how someone has a dining table that cooks food for them. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.
Aren’t you curious? Here’s a list for all the things that science has promised us so far, but failed to deliver:
1. Jetpacks
POPULAR SCIENCE
For all of us who have watched the Jetsons as kids, jetpacks have been a fantasy for long. These human-launching packs first came to existence around World War II and have been on the hold since then.
Despite multiple organisations signing deals to bring this concept to reality, all measures have failed miserably. As of now, only Martin Aircraft Company in New Zealand is working towards making this commercial.
2. Virtual Reality
MORNING TEA
Okay, calm down. Before you jump to any conclusions here, we have all dallied in the thrilling world of virtual reality through video games. And while the thrill is undeniable, we still have a long way to go before reaching the levels seen in movies like The Matrix
Given all the advances we have at our disposal, perhaps that day isn’t too far.
3. Augmented Reality
IAMWIRE
Very different from VR, augmented reality (AR) is supposed to add details to your real world, and not alter it in any sense. With this, a person will be able to see information on subjects and around them. Anyhow, work on this is already in progress. Researchers at the University of Washington are already working on lenses to give bionic vision to people.
4. Meal Pills
DISCOVERMAGZINE
Imagine the revolution it will bring. Just imagine.
5. Laser Guns
LAZERMOD
Imagine a room filled with people who are carrying bullets? In a time where the invention is the key to growth, laser guns are the next big thing likely to steal the show. These guns will have the ability to pierce through bulletproof vests and bring in the much-needed edge.
6. Androids
DEVOSDISCOVERY
We have already established our fascination with robots, and how we want to make this world a better place with them. Humans, however, for a very long time have been pinning on the idea of having androids – with no human body parts, but just pure absolute machines. These bots will come with artificial intelligence and huge advances to ease up everyday struggles.
7. Underwater Cities
YOUTUBE
We are in 2017 and still swooning over underwater hotels and places; however, science once had a full proof plan for us to live underwater, entirely. Our hopes remain unfulfilled.
8. Flying Cars
SKOLVO
Another one from the Jetsons, flying cars have been a fantasy for too long. In fact, other than what we see in the movies, there are plenty of patents filed by organisations like Uber and the like for cars that take wing.
While they will do little to fight pollution, think what it means for traffic.
9. Anti-Gravity
YOUTUBE
Who hasn’t dreamt of walking on the earth like one would walk on the moon? For as long as Sci-Fi movies have been around, one of our most popular visions has been to conquer gravity. Scientists are currently working on a plan to defy gravity; sadly, it does seem a little in the realm of fantasy for now.
10. Neuralizers
MIB
In an era where social media rules, it is not uncommon to have people around you who know your secrets. Anyhow, with neutralizers, you could erase memories, exactly like in the movie MIB. These flashes of light can be used to erase temporary memories, making life easy for millions and millions of people.
Again, more a dream than reality and perhaps slightly unethical.
11. Medical Tricorders
YOUTUBE
Till date, one of the most challenging jobs is that of a doctor. Let’s hand it to them that they cure even the most befuddling symptoms. Unfortunately, we still lose a lot of patients to uncertainty and the inability to make a right diagnosis about their diseases and the stage.
The near future now promises medical tricorders that can detect diseases for doctors.
Science is yet to deliver these advancements to us and from what we see, years could pass before we get our hands on any of them; however, the mere thought of living in a time with all of this is thrilling!
